Making Cane

I use cane in nearly all of my glass artwork. The word “cane” refers to a long, skinny, patterned rod of glass; I make mine myself. It’s a two-person sport, involving very hot glass, loud music, and a fine sense of timing and heat management.

  1. Sigh… makes me nostalgic for the days when I would help make cane! (I don’t really miss the heat, though.) Fabulous!!

  2. Love watching those cane making moments. It is mezmerizing no matter how many times you see it. Thanks for posting this!

  3. Martha, you’re a marvel! Fascinating.

  4. Truly a rare artisian creating beauty from glass and light. I love how they are “decorative as well as functional!”

  5. Nice matter-of-fact removal of the meltable/flammable plastic bag from the doorknob… ;-)

  6. This process is simply magical to me.
(And I love the plastic bag move, too — she does it without missing a beat, or a spin!)

  7. The plastic bag move further illustrates her masterful control of the media.

  8. Does that long strand translate into a bunch of knitting needles? How long does it get?

    • I can use that long strand of cane to make knitting needles, or as a decorative/design element in anything else I might make. If you look at my portfolio you will notice lots of pieces of cane incorporated into my work in various ways. One “cane pull” might be 10-12 feet long, and not all of it will be consistent enough in size to make needles with.
